August 6th Denial of Service Attack on Twitter Edit
On August 6th, Twitter -- along with other social media platforms such as Facebook -- suffered a Denial of Service attack, bringing the service down for a few hours. (A Denial of Service attack or DoS is basically when a site is swamped with so many illigitimate requests that legitimate ones can not go through, often involving botnets)
Speculated Causes Edit
The reason for the attack may have been to silence an anti-Russian blogger called Cyxymu from Tbilisi. August 6th was also the anniversary of the conflict between Russian and Georgian armies in 2008, and Cyzymu's accounts appeared to be specifically targeted. Tracking down the culprits for Denial of Service attacks is a difficult process, so as of August 13, 2009 this is still speculation.
